The Gossip Girl Phenomenon

The CW has taken the fashion craze of Sex and the City to a whole new level. With shows such as Gossip Girl, 90210, One Tree Hill, and reality show Stylista that feature up and coming fashion trends it shows that popular culture can have a huge impact on shopper. Not only is there a website dedicated to the fashion on the show, some department stores, including Barney’s, are starting to create displays that reflect Serena and Blair’s look, both on and off set. In one episode of Gossip Girl, Blake Lively, Serena, is seen wearing a Ralph Lauren blazer and within six weeks of the episode replicas of the blazer were seen all over stores like Forever 21 and H and M. That is just one example of the fashion following this show has, whereas Sex and the City primary boosted shoe sales, Gossip Girl seems to have started a movement amongst young girls. If a consumer were to walk into Forever 21 they could easily recreate almost any of the looks that are seen on the show and make the their own. Gossip Girl costume designer Eric Daman says that “Celebrity-inspired fashion has definitely been aped up.” As a former assistant designer on Sex and the City Daman said that he “…is amazed by how much faster buzz flies about Gossip Girl’s fashion in today’s social network dominated era that it did in the heyday of Sex and the City.” With the reaction of the public Daman goes on to say that the character’s names on the show are becoming like names of designer labels. Stores like Forever 21 and H and M are a good way to find the up and coming trends with Forever 21 getting in new items every day making their selection more diverse and exciting. Where Gossip Girl reaches the young adult audience, shows such as desperate Housewives and Hannah Montana reach out to other demographics influencing what they buy. Having a piece that connects a consumer to their favorite show or celebrity makes them feel apart of the Hollywood atmosphere.
